The Government today invited experts, public service managers and providers of public services to submit their ideas for public service reform.

Their views will help shape the Government’s Public Service Reform White Paper, announced in the Spending Review, which will be published next year.

The Government wants to reform public services by shifting power away from central government to the local level – to citizens, communities, and independent providers, so that they can play a greater role in shaping services.

Sainsbury’s has announced a multi-million pound training investment to upskill staff working on its fish, deli and hot food counters and in its cafes with six new food colleges.

The colleges will be set up across the UK to offer in-depth training in product knowledge, knife and preparation skills, sales, customer service and merchandising.

Coaching skills will also be taught so skills can be passed on to others when staff return to their store.

Cable: ‘Nothing is more important than addressing failings in skills training’

The government has outlined its new national skills strategy which aims to address “current failings” in training and promote economic growth. Increasing the number of adult apprenticeships, backing basic skills initiatives and expanding vocational training all featured in plans unveiled by business secretary Vince Cable yesterday, as he announced the  “ Skills for Sustainable Growth “ during a keynote speech at the Association of Colleges conference in Birmingham.

Careers guidance at heart of social mobility, reports John Hayes

The government is to launch an all-age careers service for England, in what it says is the first of its kind.
The Connexions service for young people and Next Step service for adults will be replaced by a “fully joined-up service” for all age groups from September 2011, skills minister John Hayes confirmed in a speech to the Institute for Careers Guidance (ICG) annual conference in Belfast yesterday.
